The Indian Army has established two of the world's highest tank repair facilities near the China border in Eastern Ladakh, where over 500 tanks and infantry combat vehicles are deployed amidst the ongoing stand-off with China.
These facilities, situated at altitudes of over 14,500 feet in Nyoma and the DBO Sector, aim to support operations in the region, which is considered the world's highest battlefield for tanks and infantry combat vehicles along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh.
Amidst the challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions, including temperatures dropping to minus 40 degrees Celsius, the Indian Army has deployed tanks like the T-90 and T-72, BMPs, and K-9 Vajra self-propelled Howitzers in Eastern Ladakh.
To sustain these armoured vehicle operations, the army has established Medium Maintenance (Reset) Facilities at strategic locations like Nyoma and near KM-148 on the DS-DBO Road in the DBO sector.
These facilities play a crucial role in maintaining the combat fleet's operational readiness and mission reliability, even in rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Army Chief General Manoj Pande recently visited one of these maintenance facilities, emphasising the importance of enhanced serviceability and mission reliability of tanks and infantry combat vehicles.
The infrastructure development aims to ensure that the armoured elements remain operationally ready to counter any adversary's aggression swiftly.
Additionally, staging forward of specialist technical support infrastructure has led to higher standards of operational efficiency and battle readiness in the region.
The standoff between India and China in the eastern Ladakh region has been ongoing for the past four years, with both sides deploying around 50,000 troops near the borders.
The region witnessed heightened tensions when China unilaterally attempted to change the status quo along the LAC. In response, the Indian Army swiftly mobilised heavy armoured elements to counter the adversary's moves, showcasing its readiness and capability to defend the nation's territorial integrity.
