The Government of India has designated the PIB’s fact check unit as the central authority for fact-checking. This official notification, issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), underscores the government's commitment to addressing the challenge of misinformation.

The Government of India has officially designated the Fact Check Unit (FCU) under the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) as the central government's fact-checking body.

This notification was issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in a Gazette notification today, in accordance with the provisions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

The collaboration between MIB and MeitY underscores the government's concerted efforts to combat the spread of fake news, particularly on social media platforms.

Established in November 2019, the Fact Check Unit under PIB aims to deter the creation and dissemination of fake news and misinformation.

It serves as a platform for citizens to report suspicious information related to the Government of India. The FCU is tasked with countering misinformation pertaining to government policies, initiatives, and schemes, either proactively or in response to complaints.

It diligently monitors, detects, and debunks disinformation campaigns, ensuring the timely correction of false information about the government.

Citizens can contact the PIB Fact Check Unit through various channels, including WhatsApp, email, Twitter, and PIB’s website. The Fact Check Unit's WhatsApp Hotline Number simplifies the process for individuals to forward suspicious messages for verification.

Moreover, the PIB Fact Check Unit has taken steps to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities. Recognising the significance of images in social media, the unit provides 'Alternative text' (ALT) alongside its posts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, ensuring universal access to content.
