India aims to boost global space share to 500 bn USD.

India’s space ambitions are rapidly expanding, with a growing emphasis on private sector involvement and startups to help the country increase its share of the global space market.

Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), highlighted the importance of private companies and emerging startups in accelerating space activities during his speech at the Huddle Global 2024, a flagship startup festival organized by Kerala Startup Mission.

While India has already established itself as a recognized space power, it currently holds just a two percent share of the global space business, valued at USD 386 billion. Dr. Somanath expressed India’s goal of raising this share to USD 500 billion by 2030 and further scaling it to USD 1.5 trillion by 2047.

The country’s expertise in space technology, combined with a growing number of satellite manufacturing companies, presents significant opportunities for private sector involvement, which Dr. Somanath emphasized as crucial for achieving these ambitious targets.

One of the primary areas where the private sector can make a substantial impact is satellite manufacturing. Despite India’s advancements in space technology, the country currently has only 15 operational space satellites.

Dr. Somanath pointed out that with the expertise available, India has the potential to launch at least 500 satellites into space. The emergence of private players capable of designing and placing satellites in orbit, along with the development of private launch pads, positions India to capitalize on the growing demand for satellite services globally.

The number of space startups in India has grown impressively over the past decade. From just one startup in 2014, the number has now soared to over 250 by 2024.

This growth reflects the increasing interest and investment in space-related technologies. In 2023 alone, space startups attracted a combined investment of Rs 1,000 crore, signaling the significant potential of the space sector in the country.

Furthermore, over 450 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and more than 50 large companies are now actively contributing to India’s space industry.

Dr. Somanath outlined several areas where private companies can play a major role, including satellite design, satellite launches, geospatial solutions, communication systems, and orbital transfer vehicles.

These sectors not only offer exciting business opportunities but also align with India’s growing focus on interplanetary exploration. Future projects like the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program and the Indian Space Station will be collaborative efforts, combining the strengths of both ISRO and the private sector.

India’s achievements in space are not limited to its own missions; the country has also played a significant role in launching foreign satellites. To date, India has launched 431 satellites for 28 different countries, reinforcing its position as a reliable partner in space exploration.

Dr. Somanath also highlighted ISRO’s collaborations with various international space agencies, such as NASA, CNES (France), and JAXA (Japan), on joint missions like NISAR, TRISHNA, and the Lunar Polar Exploration mission.

Addressing a question about the future of space exploration, Dr. Somanath expressed his admiration for Elon Musk’s vision of inter-planetary habitation. He acknowledged that humanity has always had an innate desire to explore, pointing out that people have spread across the world for centuries in search of new frontiers. Dr. Somanath believes that the next step in human exploration will undoubtedly involve venturing beyond Earth.
