As Jharkhand faces an intense heatwave, the state government has revised school timings for all types of educational institutions—including government, aided, unaided (including minority institutions), and private schools.
According to the new schedule, classes for pupils from Nursery to Year 8 will run from 7:00 am to 11:30 am, while those from Year 9 to Year 12 will attend from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon.
“In view of the escalating heatwave conditions across the state, the government has decided that classes for KG to Year 8 will take place from 7:00 am to 11:30 am, and for Years 9 to 12 from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon. These changes apply to all categories of schools and will remain in force until further notice,” read a statement from the School Education and Literacy Department.
Currently, the heatwave is affecting several parts of the state, with Daltonganj recording a scorching 43°C. A yellow alert for heatwave conditions has been issued for the districts of Simdega, Saraikela-Kharswan, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum, effective through 26 April.
Deputy Director of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, Abhishek Anand, reported that the mercury is hovering around 40°C across Jharkhand. He confirmed a heatwave warning for the southern part of the state.
Anand also noted that Daltonganj recorded the highest temperature at 43°C—2.2°C above the average. Jamshedpur and Chaibasa followed closely at 42.6°C and 42.4°C, respectively. Meanwhile, the state capital, Ranchi, reported a temperature of 38.8°C.
No significant dip in temperatures is expected over the next three days, Anand said. However, a drop of 3 to 5°C may occur starting 27 April, accompanied by the possibility of rain and hailstorms.
Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi has released a notice regarding the revised school hours.
The District Public Relations Office confirmed that this directive, issued in light of the intensifying heat, aligns with the School Education and Literacy Department’s orders and will come into effect from 26 April 2025.
