External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reaffirmed the Indian government's commitment to ensuring the safe return of Indian citizens worldwide. Speaking at an intellectual meet in Gujarat's Rajkot, Jaishankar highlighted India's proactive foreign policy, particularly in evacuation operations such as Operation Indravati in Haiti and Operation Ganga in Ukraine.
Jaishankar emphasised the importance of Indian citizens travelling abroad having full confidence in the government's support during crises. He stressed that India stands by its citizens in various eventualities, including conflicts, natural disasters, and emergencies, citing instances like the earthquake in Nepal, war in Yemen, and the conflict in Sudan.
In his address, Jaishankar contrasted India's extensive evacuation efforts with those of other nations during crises, particularly highlighting the significant evacuation operations in Ukraine. He underscored the need for countries to prioritise the safety of their citizens abroad, noting that leaving citizens to their fate diminishes national respect.
The External Affairs Minister reiterated that India's foreign policy is geared towards instilling confidence among its citizens travelling abroad. He emphasised that the government's assurances are backed by concrete actions, such as the establishment of systems and funds to assist stranded citizens and the coordination of efforts across different ministries and defence forces.
Jaishankar also recalled notable evacuation missions like Operation Kaveri in Sudan and Operation Ganga in Ukraine, highlighting India's unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its nationals during crises. These operations, along with initiatives like Operation Devi Shakti in Afghanistan and the Vande Bharat mission during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscore India's proactive stance in safeguarding its citizens abroad.
The reaffirmation of India's commitment to its citizens' safety abroad comes as a reassurance amid global uncertainties and crises. Jaishankar's remarks serve to bolster confidence among Indian nationals travelling overseas, emphasising that the government stands ready to assist and protect its citizens wherever they may be.
