The meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was scheduled for today, has been postponed due to technical reasons.
The meeting will now take place on September 19 and 20, 2024. The original plan was to hold meetings on September 18, 19, and 20 at the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi.
During the postponed meeting, representatives from the Ministry of Minority Affairs were expected to provide oral evidence regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The committee will also hear from several experts and stakeholders, including Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna, and representatives of organisations such as Pasmanda Muslim Mahaaz, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, and the All India Sajjadanashin Council.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, focuses on addressing issues related to the management, preservation, and potential misuse of Waqf properties. The bill aims to introduce reforms to ensure better management of Waqf properties, which are often used for religious, charitable, or social purposes in the Muslim community.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence that the bill would soon be passed in Parliament. Shah highlighted that the bill is crucial for the proper administration of Waqf properties and that the government is committed to its passage. He made this statement during a press conference marking the first 100 days of the third term of the Narendra Modi government.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee has been reviewing the bill in multiple sessions. In the most recent meeting on September 6, senior officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) gave a presentation before the committee.
Additionally, various stakeholders, including the Zakat Foundation of India and the Telangana Waqf Board, shared their views and suggestions regarding the proposed amendments.
The upcoming meetings on September 19 and 20 will continue the process of gathering insights and recommendations from experts, stakeholders, and government officials.
The aim is to create a comprehensive bill that addresses the concerns surrounding Waqf properties, ensuring that they are managed effectively and used for the benefit of the community.
