Arvind Kejriwal has resigned as Delhi Chief Minister, paving the way for Atishi to form the new government. This shift in leadership follows Kejriwal's recent bail in the Delhi excise case and his subsequent decision to step down, pending a renewed mandate from Delhi's voters.

Atishi, elected by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators to lead, has staked her claim to form the new government.

On Tuesday, Kejriwal formally submitted his resignation to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. Gopal Rai, an AAP leader and Delhi minister, explained that Kejriwal's resignation aligns with his earlier statement that he would only return to the Chief Minister role after securing a fresh electoral mandate.

Rai confirmed that the AAP MLAs convened and elected Atishi as their new leader, and the party has requested the LG to schedule her swearing-in ceremony promptly to address the needs of Delhi's residents.

The new administration, led by Atishi, will continue to build upon the initiatives started by Kejriwal. Following his release from Tihar Jail on September 14, Kejriwal faces certain conditions imposed by the apex court, including restrictions on public comments related to the case and mandatory attendance at trial hearings.

The Delhi Assembly's current term is set to end on February 11, 2025. AAP has expressed hopes that the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi will coincide with those in Maharashtra and Jharkhand later this year.
