Indian security agencies have received confirmation from US authorities that Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Passia, a gangster-turned-Khalistani terrorist, will be deported to India in the coming days.
Passia, who is wanted for orchestrating at least 14 grenade attacks in Punjab, has long been on the radar of Indian investigative agencies. He is accused of targeting police stations, religious sites, and the homes of prominent public figures in a series of terror incidents that caused widespread concern across the state.
A known associate of the banned Khalistani outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), Passia is also believed to have maintained links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI.
His transition from organised crime to militancy elevated his threat profile significantly, prompting the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to place a reward of ₹5 lakh on his head for any information leading to his arrest.
The Punjab Police had earlier submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Home Affairs for his extradition. Following that, Indian security agencies coordinated with their American counterparts very actively, leading to the breakthrough.
Passia reportedly entered the United States illegally in 2021 via human trafficking networks. Once in the US, he continued to operate from the shadows, using burner phones to plan and coordinate acts of terror on Indian soil while avoiding digital tracking.
His arrest by the FBI in Sacramento, California, in April 2025 marked a significant development in joint Indo-US counterterrorism cooperation. The confirmation of his extradition is now being seen as a major diplomatic and security achievement for both nations.
