Union Minister for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju launched the UMEED Central Portal on Friday, marking a significant reform in the administration and management of Waqf properties in India. The portal, developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, is a centralised digital platform designed to enable real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf assets.
Speaking at the launch event in New Delhi, Rijiju said the initiative would bring much-needed transparency and accountability to Waqf property governance. He added that the UMEED Portal would not only revolutionise the system but also serve the broader interests of the Muslim community, especially women and children.
Describing the portal as a transformative step, he remarked, “The UMEED Portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help the common Muslims, particularly women and children.”
The portal was officially inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian. Emphasising the government’s commitment to inclusive development, Rijiju said the new system is more than a technological enhancement — it reflects the Centre’s determination to ensure that Waqf assets, which are community-endowed, are used efficiently and justly for the welfare of poor Muslims, as originally intended.

According to an official statement, UMEED — which stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development — will function as a unified national system to digitise and manage Waqf properties across states. The platform includes several advanced features such as a digital inventory with geo-tagging of properties, an online grievance redressal system, transparent tracking of leasing and usage, integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools, and public access to verified records and reports.
George Kurian described the launch as a long-awaited and essential reform. He stressed that the system would reduce the chances of misuse, adding that every Waqf property would now be monitored and used according to the intent of its original endowment.
Secretary of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, expressed confidence that the UMEED Portal would become the backbone of digital Waqf governance in the country. He noted that the effective management of Waqf properties through this platform could contribute significantly to areas such as education, healthcare, livelihood creation, and social welfare, particularly for marginalised sections of the Muslim community.
