Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren’s recent visit to India from August 27-31 has significantly strengthened the bilateral ties between India and Chile, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
His visit, which was at the invitation of India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, provided a platform for reviewing ongoing cooperation and further advancing the relationship between the two nations.
During his stay, Klaveren and Jaishankar co-chaired the 2nd India-Chile Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on August 28. This meeting was pivotal in reviewing the status of bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for collaboration.
The discussions were comprehensive, covering a wide range of areas including trade and investment, agriculture, critical minerals, digital public infrastructure, defence, railways, health and pharmaceuticals, science and technology, as well as Antarctica and space exploration.
Both ministers emphasised the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. They also reiterated their commitment to closer cooperation in multilateral forums, further solidifying the strategic partnership between the two countries.
In addition to his engagements in New Delhi, van Klaveren met with Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, where they discussed ways to deepen and diversify bilateral trade and economic relations.
This meeting was complemented by the inauguration of the Chile-India Business (Agriculture) Summit, an event aimed at bolstering agricultural trade and collaboration between the two countries.
Van Klaveren’s visit also had a strong academic and cultural component. He delivered a lecture on Chile’s foreign policy at the School of International Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, addressing a gathering of diplomats, faculty members, and students. This lecture provided valuable insights into Chile’s global stance and its relationship with India.
The Foreign Minister's itinerary included a visit to Mumbai from August 29-30, where he explored various sectors of Indian industry and culture. He visited Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Masala market, underscoring the importance of trade in agricultural products.
He also participated in a Chilean wine-tasting event, promoting Chilean culture and products to the Indian market. Additionally, van Klaveren delivered remarks at the 'Shooting in Chile' event, which showcased Chile as an attractive destination for Indian film productions. This event highlighted the potential for greater collaboration between the two countries in the creative industries, particularly in filmmaking.
