Nitin Gadkari Labels Maharashtra Government's 'Ladki Bahin Yojana' as Poisonous.

In Maharashtra, a fresh controversy has emerged following comments made by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding the state's flagship welfare scheme, the 'Ladki Bahin Yojana.' This initiative, designed to provide financial assistance to underprivileged women, has come under scrutiny as Gadkari raised concerns about its impact on other subsidy payments. His remarks have sparked a heated debate among political parties, particularly in the context of the upcoming assembly elections.

During a public event in Nagpur, Gadkari, who is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), referred to the Maharashtra government as a "vishkanya," a term that translates to "poisonous maiden."

He suggested that the government's financial commitments to the Ladki Bahin Yojana could hinder timely payments of subsidies in other sectors. This comment comes at a time when opposition parties are questioning the scheme’s financial sustainability, highlighting the potential strain it could place on the state's budget.

The 'Ladki Bahin Yojana' is a significant initiative led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Mahayuti government. It aims to provide a monthly stipend of ₹1,500 to married, divorced, and destitute women aged 21 to 65.

However, this program is projected to cost the state approximately ₹46,000 crore annually, raising concerns about the state's financial health, especially ahead of the elections.

Gadkari emphasised the need for independent investments in the state, encouraging entrepreneurs in the Vidarbha region, which includes Nagpur, to take the lead rather than relying solely on government support.

His comments were particularly pointed, suggesting that the financial burdens imposed by welfare schemes could jeopardise timely subsidy payments for other essential programs.

His remarks have drawn criticism from the opposition parties, particularly the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction).

They seized on Gadkari's comments to argue that if those within the government express concerns about the state's economy, it is indeed a serious issue. The opposition has labelled the Ladki Bahin Yojana as financially unviable, using Gadkari’s statements to bolster their case against the ruling coalition.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut echoed these sentiments, pointing out the implications of potential fund mismanagement at a time when the treasury is reportedly lacking resources. He questioned whether the Union government bears any responsibility for the state's financial strategy, particularly in light of the Ladki Bahin Yojana.

In response to the controversy, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis attempted to downplay Gadkari’s comments. He stated that Gadkari has a unique way of expressing his views and that his intentions were likely misunderstood. Fadnavis reassured the public that the government is committed to managing its resources effectively while ensuring the success of welfare programs.

The political landscape in Maharashtra is heating up as the assembly elections approach. The state is witnessing a two-way contest between the MVA coalition, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP led by Sharad Pawar, and the Congress, against the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, and NCP led by Ajit Pawar.
