PM Modi Receives Warm Welcome in Laos Amid Cultural Festivities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from both the Indian diaspora and the Laotian community upon his arrival in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, for a two-day visit. The reception was marked by a sense of camaraderie and cultural celebration, reflecting the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.

As PM Modi arrived at his hotel, he was greeted by a large gathering that included many people chanting the Gayatri Mantra, a significant Hindu hymn.

Attendees welcomed him in Hindi, saying, “Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi ji, aapka Laos mei hardik swagat hai,” which translates to "Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we warmly welcome you in Laos." This display of respect and affection set a positive tone for his visit.

Part of the cultural festivities included a captivating Bihu dance performance featuring Laotian participants. Bihu, a traditional dance from Assam in India, signifies the arrival of the Assamese New Year and the spring season.

The dance showcased the vibrant cultural heritage shared between the Indian and Laotian peoples, further reinforcing the bonds formed through centuries of history.

In a significant gesture, PM Modi met with senior Buddhist monks during his visit, highlighting the ancient connections that link India and Laos through Buddhism.

This relationship has flourished for over 2,000 years. According to local folklore, relics of Gautama Buddha were transported to Laos and enshrined at the Pha That Luang stupa, a revered national monument that stands as a symbol of Laos’ rich spiritual heritage.

The Prime Minister also had the opportunity to witness an exhibition on the restoration and conservation efforts at the Vat Phou temple complex, which have been undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

This initiative demonstrates India’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage in the region, as well as the importance of collaboration in safeguarding historical sites.

During his visit, PM Modi was treated to a performance of the Lao Ramayana, known locally as Phalak Phalam or Phra Lak Phra Ram. This artistic presentation, staged by the Royal Theatre of Luang Prabang, beautifully illustrated the cultural connections shared between India and Laos, particularly through the narratives of the Ramayana, which is an integral part of both cultures.

The Prime Minister’s arrival was further highlighted by a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the airport, where he was received by Laos’ Minister of Home Affairs, Vilayvong Bouddakham. This formal welcome signified the respect and importance of PM Modi’s visit to the Laotian government.

In a brief statement posted on social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for the meetings ahead, saying, “Landed in Lao PDR. Looking forward to the deliberations with various world leaders.” His visit comes as he attends the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit, following an invitation from Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, who is the current chair of ASEAN.

Before leaving India, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the East Asia Summit as a key forum for discussing issues of peace, stability, and prosperity within the Indo-Pacific region. He remarked, “This year marks a decade of our Act East Policy. I will join ASEAN leaders to review progress in our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and chart the future direction of our cooperation.”

During his remarks, PM Modi underscored the deep cultural connections India shares with Laos, particularly through the shared heritage of Buddhism and the Ramayana. He expressed his eagerness to engage with Laotian leaders to further enhance bilateral relations, stating, “I am confident that this visit will further deepen our engagement with ASEAN countries.”

Throughout the visit, PM Modi is expected to participate in several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of both the ASEAN and East Asia Summits. India’s strong ties with ASEAN nations are a crucial component of its Act East policy, which aims to bolster relationships with Southeast Asian countries and reinforce its Indo-Pacific Vision.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated the importance of ASEAN-India relations, indicating that the summit will focus on reviewing progress achieved through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and discussing future cooperative efforts. The East Asia Summit is viewed as a critical platform for fostering strategic trust among participating countries, including India, as they exchange views on pressing regional issues.
