Delhi’s political landscape is set to undergo a significant change as Atishi, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is poised to take over as the Chief Minister of Delhi.

This transition comes after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal submitted his resignation from the post. According to recent developments, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, has proposed September 21 as the date for Atishi’s swearing-in ceremony.

Atishi, who has been a prominent figure in Delhi's political scene, will be stepping into the role at a crucial time. Her letter addressed to the Lieutenant Governor regarding the formation of the new government did not specify a date for the ceremony, leading to the LG's decision to propose September 21 for her oath-taking.

Interestingly, Atishi’s communication did not mention the names of her cabinet ministers, suggesting that she might take the oath alone initially, with cabinet decisions to follow later.

Arvind Kejriwal, the outgoing Chief Minister, has been a towering figure in Delhi politics for several years. His decision to step down has sent ripples across the political spectrum. As he prepares to leave office, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Singh, provided some insight into Kejriwal’s future plans.

Speaking at a press conference, Singh revealed that Kejriwal is determined to vacate his official residence within a week and will also relinquish all the privileges associated with his role as Chief Minister.

Singh emphasised the sacrifices Kejriwal is willing to make, noting that he plans to live among the common people without the perks of security or other facilities provided to a Chief Minister.

"After resigning, Kejriwal said he would leave all the facilities that come with being the CM, including security, and live as a common man. Despite our concerns about his safety, given the number of times he has faced threats, Kejriwal was firm in his decision," Singh explained.

Kejriwal's safety has been a matter of concern for AAP leaders, especially given his history of attacks and threats. Sanjay Singh reiterated this, recalling past incidents where Kejriwal had been targeted physically.

Despite this, Kejriwal remains resolute, trusting that he will be protected. “He said, ‘I lived for six months in jail, and God saved me then. God will save me now too,’” Singh recounted, referring to Kejriwal's time in jail during legal proceedings related to his role in the Delhi Excise Policy case.

Atishi’s rise to the position of Chief Minister marks a new chapter for Delhi. Known for her work in the education sector and her leadership within AAP, she brings her own vision and style to the top post.

Her leadership will be closely watched as she navigates the challenges that come with managing the capital city. Atishi has been a vital part of AAP’s governance model, particularly in transforming Delhi’s public education system, and her track record has earned her respect both within and outside her party.

On the other hand, Kejriwal’s departure is not just a political shift but also a personal one. His decision to step down, live without official security, and leave his residence shows his commitment to live among the people he served for years.

His supporters view this move as a testament to his ideals, while others in the political arena may see it as a strategic decision ahead of potential elections.

As Delhi gears up for this transition, all eyes are on Atishi and her next steps as Chief Minister. With the swearing-in ceremony proposed for September 21, the capital is set to witness a historic moment in its governance. Atishi’s leadership will shape the future of AAP in Delhi, and her decisions in the coming days will define her tenure as the head of the Delhi government.

Kejriwal, meanwhile, will continue to play a role in the party and in national politics, albeit in a different capacity. His legacy in Delhi is one of major reforms, particularly in education, healthcare, and governance. As he moves into this next phase of his career, his impact on Delhi will continue to be felt, even as Atishi takes over the reins.
