On the 78th Independence Day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla hoisted the national flag at his residence in New Delhi. The occasion was marked by his heartfelt tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices paved the way for India's independence.
Birla emphasised that August 15 should be a day of inspiration, reflecting on the courage and dedication of those who gave their lives for the nation's freedom.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also celebrated Independence Day by hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort for the 11th consecutive year.
The ceremony was accompanied by a ‘Rashtriya Salute’ from the Punjab Regiment Military band, which played the National Anthem as part of the flag hoisting event. The band, led by Subedar Major Rajinder Singh, added a ceremonial touch to the occasion.
Prime Minister Modi was welcomed by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, and Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane upon his arrival.
The Defence Secretary introduced Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, the General Officer Commanding Delhi Area, who guided the Prime Minister to the Saluting Base.
There, a combined Inter-Services and Delhi Police Guard presented a general salute, followed by an inspection of the Guard of Honour by the Prime Minister. This contingent included one officer and 24 personnel each from the Army, Air Force, and Delhi Police.
In his address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to the countless freedom fighters, stating that the nation owes them a debt of gratitude. His speech highlighted the importance of remembering their sacrifices and the ongoing significance of independence.
Modi's address, marking his 11th consecutive Independence Day speech, was a reminder of the enduring legacy of the struggle for freedom and the responsibilities that come with it.
The celebrations on Independence Day not only honoured the past but also reaffirmed the nation's commitment to the values of freedom and democracy.
