Police on Monday arrested a 25-year-old man  for allegedly assaulting the cabin crew and attempting to open the aircraft door during an Air India Express flight from Kozhikode to Bahrain.

The incident prompted an emergency landing at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Saturday, according to Mumbai police.

The accused, Abdul Musavir Nadukandee from Kerala, reportedly woke up shortly after takeoff and immediately proceeded to the back of the plane.

There, he allegedly attacked the cabin crew and tried to open the aircraft door.

Despite the crew managing to escort Nadukandee back to his seat, he continued his disruptive behavior, verbally abusing and assaulting fellow passengers while repeatedly threatening to open the emergency exit.

Concerned for the safety of those onboard, the pilot decided to make an emergency landing at CSMIA and alerted airport security.

Police arrested Nadukandee upon landing. He now faces charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 336 for endangering life, Section 504 for provoking a breach of the peace, Section 506 for criminal intimidation, and Section 323 for voluntarily causing hurt.

Additional charges under relevant provisions of the Aircraft Act have also been filed.
