The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has opened the strategically important Leh-Manali highway connecting Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh after Five months of closure’ officials said.

The highway usually remains closed due to heavy snow accumulation on the road, at the onset of winter every year.

According to an official statement, “Project Deepak in Himachal Pradesh and Project Himank in Ladakh worked together to clear the snow, and the route was opened to Army vehicles on Sunday.

To clear the route, units from both sides worked in extraordinarily difficult conditions, including snowstorms and high altitudes,” said an army spokesperson.

The 427-kilometer-long route connecting Ladakh to the rest of India via Manali is critical for the passage of army soldiers, supplies, and goods to forward locations in the Ladakh region bordering China and Pakistan.

The highway acts as a secondary route to the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway and is renowned among travellers nationwide.

Most adventure seekers opt for this route, traversing through the Zojila Pass to reach the iconic Pangong Tso Lake.
