Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the Central government has ordered the conduct of a mock drill, in which citizens will be trained to protect themselves during an attack.
The exercise is scheduled to take place in 244 districts across the country on 7 May.
In Jharkhand, the mock drill will be conducted in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Godda, Sahibganj and Bokaro districts.
Owing to the presence of an explosives factory in Gomia, Bokaro district, a separate mock drill will be organised there.
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level meeting on India’s civil defence preparedness with Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories.
Senior officials from the NDRF, NDMA, Home Guards, Railway Board, and the Indian Air Force (Air Defence) were also present at the meeting.
Notably, a mock drill is a type of preparedness exercise used to assess how quickly the general public and the administration respond to emergency scenarios, such as an airstrike or bomb attack in a specific area.
A blackout exercise involves turning off all lights in an area for a designated period.
The objective is to demonstrate how the area can be secured in darkness during a potential enemy attack, making it harder for the adversary to target specific locations.
The last such mock drill was conducted in 1971, during the war between India and Pakistan.
