Sixth India-Zambia session marks milestone in ties.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is currently on a four-day official visit to Zambia, where he co-chaired the sixth session of the India-Zambia Joint Permanent Commission alongside Zambia's Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe.

The meeting, held after a gap of nearly two decades since the last session in New Delhi in 2005, is a significant step in reinforcing the long-standing partnership between India and Zambia.

During this session, both nations engaged in comprehensive discussions aimed at reviewing and expanding their bilateral ties. Kirti Vardhan Singh shared his enthusiasm on social media, emphasising the productive exchange and commitment to strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

Singh described the meeting as an opportunity to "review the entire gamut of the bilateral relationship" and explore avenues to "expand and diversify" India-Zambia cooperation.

The timing of this session holds special significance, as India and Zambia are commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations. Since establishing ties, the countries have collaborated on a variety of fronts, from economic partnerships to cultural exchanges.

Economic engagement remains a core aspect of their relationship, with India emerging as one of Zambia's top foreign investors. In 2023-24, bilateral trade between India and Zambia reached USD 448.39 million, and India has committed over USD 5 billion in investments, highlighting its dedication to supporting Zambia's economic growth.

Singh’s visit also underscores India's efforts to foster environmental responsibility and sustainable development. On November 6, he participated in a symbolic gesture by planting a mango sapling at the High Commission of India in Lusaka.

This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign, which encourages environmental stewardship as a shared responsibility.

The campaign, which translates to "One Tree for Mother," is an ongoing effort to increase awareness about the importance of preserving the environment for future generations.
