The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a significant initiative aimed at showcasing India's maritime heritage. The project, known as the National Maritime Heritage Complex, will be established in Lothal, Gujarat, and is set to become the largest maritime heritage complex globally.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided insights into the project, highlighting its purpose to celebrate and display India’s diverse maritime history. The museum in Lothal is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, providing an educational and cultural experience centred around maritime history.

The development of the complex will be executed in two phases, with the Cabinet granting in-principle approval for Phases 1B and 2. The first phase is currently underway, with over 60% of the physical work completed. This phase is anticipated to be completed by 2025.

To fund this ambitious project, the government plans to gather resources through voluntary contributions, ensuring the necessary financial backing before construction begins.

One of the highlights of Phase 1B includes the construction of a Lighthouse Museum, which will be funded by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships. This museum is projected to be the tallest lighthouse museum in the world, emphasising the project’s ambition.

Furthermore, a dedicated society will be established to oversee the development of future phases, managed by a Governing Council headed by the Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.

The National Maritime Heritage Complex aims to create job opportunities for many individuals in the region. The development is expected to generate approximately 22,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and 7,000 indirect employment opportunities.

This initiative is poised to enhance local economies, supporting not only those directly involved in the project but also benefiting nearby communities and businesses.

The design for Phase 1A includes a comprehensive museum featuring six galleries, one of which will focus on the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, making it one of the largest displays of its kind in the country.

Visitors can expect to see a variety of naval artefacts, a replica model of the Lothal township surrounded by an open aquatic gallery, and a jetty walkway that will enhance the visitor experience.

Phase 1B plans to expand the complex further by adding eight additional galleries, providing a more in-depth exploration of maritime history. Alongside these galleries, the Lighthouse Museum will serve as a central attraction, showcasing the evolution of lighthouses and their significance to maritime navigation. The project will also include a Bagicha complex that offers parking for about 1,500 cars, a food hall for visitors, and a medical centre to ensure the well-being of guests.

In addition to the galleries and museums, Phase 2 will introduce Coastal State Pavilions that will be developed by various coastal states and union territories. This phase will also feature a hospitality zone that includes a maritime-themed eco-resort and unique "museotels" for tourists. There are plans for a recreation of the ancient Lothal city, alongside a maritime institute that will serve as an educational hub for students and scholars.
