Navy was ready to strike Karachi, kept Pak ships in harbour

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror hideouts in Pakistan and PoK in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack. In a series of precision strikes, Indian forces destroyed key terror infrastructure.

Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt General Rajiv Ghai with Air Marshal AK Bharti and Vice Admiral AN Pramod during a press conference on 'Operation Sindoor', in New Delhi, Sunday.

In a significant revelation, Vice Admiral AN Pramod confirmed on Sunday that the Indian Navy was fully prepared and capable of launching strikes on both land and sea targets, including Karachi, during the execution of Operation Sindoor. His statement came during a joint press briefing by the Army, Navy, and Air Force on the progress and impact of the operation.

"Our forces remained forward deployed in the Arabian Sea in a decisive posture with full readiness and capacity to strike select targets in sea and on land, including Karachi at the time of our choosing," said Vice Admiral Pramod, underscoring the Navy’s high alert status during the course of the operation.

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. The operation targeted terror hideouts deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian Army and Air Force conducted a series of precision strikes from both air and ground, systematically dismantling major terrorist infrastructure.

While these strikes were underway, the Indian Navy remained in full operational readiness, deployed in forward positions and prepared to act if required.

According to the Navy, their strategic positioning and preparedness forced the Pakistani Navy into a defensive mode. Most of Pakistan's naval units remained confined to harbours or stayed close to the coastline, significantly limiting their manoeuvrability. Indian forces maintained constant surveillance of Pakistani maritime movements.

"The Indian Navy maintained seamless maritime domain awareness throughout the duration and was entirely aware of the locations and movement of Pakistani units," Vice Admiral Pramod stated, highlighting the precision with which Indian forces monitored adversary actions.

He further stressed that India’s military response has been deliberate, responsible, and well-calibrated. “India’s actions have remained measured, proportionate, non-escalatory, and responsible since the beginning,” he said.

In the days following the Pahalgam attack, the Indian Navy initiated multiple live-firing drills and weapons testing exercises in the Arabian Sea. These included launch tests and combat-readiness drills aimed at validating and refining strike capabilities.

"Within 96 hours of the terrorist attack, the Navy tested and refined tactics and procedures at sea during multiple weapon firings in the Arabian Sea, revalidating the crew, armament, equipment and platform readiness to deliver various ordnance on selected targets precisely," read a Navy statement shared on X (formerly Twitter).

India’s assertive posture came after several top government leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, promised a strong and decisive response to the Pahalgam attack. All three armed forces stood prepared to execute operations at scale, if needed.

Tensions between India and Pakistan sharply escalated after the Pahalgam incident. In addition to military action under Operation Sindoor, India undertook a series of diplomatic and economic countermeasures. These included suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, downgrading diplomatic ties, revoking visas issued to Pakistani nationals, closing Indian airspace to Pakistani flights, halting bilateral trade, and pushing for international financial and diplomatic isolation of Pakistan.

Operation Sindoor continues to be a coordinated show of India's military might and strategic resolve, with all three armed forces operating in unison to safeguard national security and send a strong message to adversaries.
