The Border Security Force (BSF) is set to undergo a uniform upgrade, introducing a new digital camouflage pattern, said the officials. This makeover comes as a part of a significant modernisation effort.
The new uniforms, featuring a pixelated camouflage pattern, are tailored for India’s diverse terrains, ensuring better concealment in border environments, making it more breatheable. The design incorporates lighter, more durable fabrics to improve comfort and mobility for troops deployed in challenging conditions. The new uniforms are expected to be rolled out over the next year.
The updated design aims to enhance operational effectiveness and align with contemporary military standards, marking a shift from the traditional khaki attire worn since the force’s inception in 1965. The existing uniform of the BSF is 50% cotton and 50% polyester. The updated one will be 80% cotton, 19% polyester, and 1% spandex. Talking about the colours, the new BSF uniform will be 50% khaki, 45% green, and 5% brown, the officials said.

The decision follows extensive research and trials conducted over one year by a team of BSF personnel, in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and other experts.
The project, approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, underscores the government’s focus on strengthening border security through advanced equipment and training. While the exact cost of the transition remains undisclosed, officials described it as a “priority investment” for national security. The BSF plans to showcase the uniforms publicly in the coming months, with initial deployments expected along key border outposts.
