The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is steaming towards a greener future, aligning itself with Indian Railways' ambitious target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
In a significant stride towards sustainability, NFR is rapidly installing rooftop solar power plants across its vast network.
NFR's "Go-Green" mission has seen 146 stations and service buildings equipped with solar panels as of April 2024.
This impressive feat generates a collective 6747 Kilowatt Peak (KWp) of solar energy.
Spanning across Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, these installations showcase NFR's dedication to harnessing solar power.
Leading the charge are Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding, and Tinsukia divisions, generating a commendable 657KWp, 426KWp, 925KWp, 1035KWp, and 207KWp of solar power respectively.
Notably, NFR's headquarters in Guwahati contributes a significant 1497 KWp of solar energy.
The Guwahati station had became the first railway station in the north east region of India to be fully powered with grid connected Solar Power with commissioning of a 700 KWp solar plant in the year 2017.
The commitment to renewable energy extends beyond stations. Workshops at New Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh have each been equipped with 1000 KWp solar power plants, further bolstering NFR's green efforts.
The recently concluded financial year (2023-24) witnessed a notable expansion.
An additional 18 stations and service buildings in Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal were outfitted with solar panels, generating an extra 609 KWp.
Alipurduar, Rangiya, and Lumding divisions spearheaded this growth with installations at 20, 220, and 369 locations respectively.
Major stations like Dhupguri, Falakata, Agartala, Sabroom, Dhalaibil, and several others have also joined the solar revolution.
NFR's relentless pursuit of solar power is a win-win. It not only addresses energy requirements sustainably but also translates to significant cost savings.
This focus on clean energy resonates with Indian Railways' national target. Over 200 MW of solar power has already been installed at major stations across India.
As of October 2023, an impressive 211.49 MW solar rooftop capacity has been established in 1498 railway stations nationwide.
