The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has established rules to impose double toll fees on users who intentionally do not install FASTags on their vehicle windshields.
The government states that not affixing FASTags on the windshield causes unnecessary delays at toll plazas, inconveniencing other users.
A comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been issued to all User Fee Collection Agencies and Concessionaires, instructing them to implement double toll fees for vehicles without FASTags on the front windshield.
This information will be prominently displayed at all user fee plazas to notify highway users about the penalties for entering a toll lane without a mounted FASTag on the front windshield.
Additionally, CCTV footage with Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRN) at the fee plaza will be recorded for cases where the FASTag is not affixed. This will assist in maintaining accurate records of the fees charged and the presence of the vehicle in the toll lane.
As per the established regulations, the NHAI's objective is to ensure that the standard procedural guidelines for attaching FASTag from the inside on the front windshield of the designated vehicle are adhered to.
If a FASTag is not affixed to the vehicle in accordance with the standard process, it will not be able to conduct Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) transactions at a User Fee Plaza and will be subject to paying double toll fees and potential blacklisting.
The issuing banks have also been instructed to ensure that the FASTag is affixed to the designated vehicle's front windshield from various points of sale (POS) at the time of issuance.
With a penetration rate of approximately 98 per cent and a user base of over 8 crore, FASTag has transformed the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country.
The government stated that the decision to impose double user fees for non-affixation of FASTag will enhance the efficiency of toll operations and ensure a smooth and convenient travel experience for National Highway users.
