The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has successfully prosecuted and sentenced two members of the banned Bangladeshi terrorist group Ansar-al-Islam for their involvement in a conspiracy to plan terrorist attacks in India.

Identified as Mahmud Hassan alias Shariful Hassan (A-1) and Mohamad Sayad Hussain alias Mohamad Sa'ad Hussain alias Sohan Molla alias Shihab Hossain, both Bangladeshi nationals, have each received five years' imprisonment.

They were also fined Rs 10,000 each, with an alternative of one month's imprisonment, for their roles in violating various provisions of the IPC, Foreigners Act, and UA(P) Act.

The NIA Special Court in Aizawl, Mizoram, delivered the verdict after the agency took over the case in September 2019 and subsequently charged the individuals in January 2020.

The investigation, under case RC-11/2019/NIA-GUW, uncovered their use of fake Indian identity documents, including Aadhar cards, to illegally reside in India.

The agency's probe revealed their connection to Ansar-al-Islam, claiming affiliation with Al-Qaeda's Bangladesh wing, and their active involvement in planning terrorist activities.

Digital evidence, including incriminating audios, Jihadist propaganda, and bomb-making details, along with multiple mobile phones and SIM cards seized, substantiated their roles in the conspiracy.

Mahmud Hassan, mentored by Abdul Wadud and guided by handler Munir, conducted surveillance on significant locations in Bengaluru, while Mohamad Sayad Hussain, directed by Bashir Ahmed, evaded detection through frequent relocations and false identities.
