Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Ladakh leaders that "even if the Prime Minister asks me, I won't grant Sixth Schedule or statehood to Ladakh." said activist, and social reformer Sonam Wangchuk.

Wangchuk said in a video titled "KYA HUA TERA WAADA" that the Home Minister gave this message to Ladakh leaders during a meeting in New Delhi on March 4.

Wangchuk added that the Prime Minister may be interested in providing the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh to honour the BJP's commitments to the region's people, but it appears that the Union Home Minister has impeded this endeavour.

According to Wangchuk, Shah confidently said in “Assam that China has not taken a single inch of Ladakh territory.”

However, he continued, this is paradoxical “because Ladakhi shepherds are not permitted to go to grazing pastures near the Chinese border.”

On February 19, a sub-committee from the Ministry of Home Affairs met with Ladakh leaders in New Delhi.

The meeting was considered a success by the Ladakh leaders. However, the previous meeting with Amit Shah on March 4 yielded no results.

Following the meeting, Wangchuk said he would go on a hunger strike after the deadlock in talks between the high-powered committee and Ladakh leaders.

On March 26, Wangchuk finished his 21-day fast and said that “the people of Ladakh will continue to resist.”

Ladakh leaders are demanding the Inclusion and extension of the sixth schedule, this would include the ability to enact laws governing forest management, agriculture, village and town administration, inheritance, marriage, divorce, and social norms.

The Scheduled Tribes account for the vast bulk of the people of Ladakh.
