Northeast India has emerged as a significant beneficiary of the recent strides made in India-Bangladesh relations, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
Speaking at an interactive session on Northeast India's integration with Southeast Asia and Japan in New Delhi's Kirori Mal College, Jaishankar emphasised how historical factors had impeded the region's growth in the decades following India's partition.
Jaishankar highlighted that Northeast India faced challenges such as political barriers and administrative issues, hindering its natural connectivity. He remarked that the current positive developments in India-Bangladesh relations should have occurred much earlier if history had been more favourable.
The External Affairs Minister pointed out that the past decade witnessed a remarkable improvement in ties between India and Bangladesh, particularly after the landmark land boundary agreement in 2015.
This enhanced cooperation has greatly benefited Northeast India, fostering a new level of trust and confidence between the two nations.
Jaishankar emphasised the need for India to prioritise its engagement with the Northeast, suggesting that Delhi should first "Look East" and recognize the region's potential and possibilities.
He underscored the importance of fully appreciating the Northeast's significance in India's broader strategic outlook.
India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted ties based on shared history, language, and culture. Their bilateral relationship is characterised by mutual respect, trust, and understanding, extending beyond mere strategic interests.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the crucial role of the North East in India's journey towards development. He outlined the BJP's 'HIRA' developmental model, focusing on Highways, Internet connectivity, Railways, and Air connectivity, aimed at enhancing connectivity within the North East and with neighbouring countries.
The 'HIRA' model aligns with India's Act East policy, aimed at bolstering trade and connectivity with East and Southeast Asian nations. It encompasses various infrastructure projects, including bridges, roads, and internet connectivity, designed to integrate the North East more closely with the rest of the country and its neighbours.
