The BJP-led NDA government is expected to implement the 'One Nation, One Election' reform during its current tenure, sources familar with the development have informed.

The move is anticipated to garner support across party lines, aligning with a key promise made in the BJP's manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term marks 100 days in office, sources expressed confidence that the government would ensure the reform's passage before the end of its term.

“Definitely, it will be implemented in this tenure itself. It will be a reality,” said one source, who spoke anonymously.

The Prime Minister had strongly advocated for the reform during his Independence Day speech, highlighting the disruptions caused by frequent elections.

“The nation has to come forward for 'One Nation, One Election',” Modi stated from the Red Fort. He urged political parties to support the initiative, saying, “We have to come forward to realise the dream of 'One Nation, One Election'.”

A high-level committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, had earlier recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as a first step. The committee also suggested that local body elections be synchronised within 100 days.

The Law Commission is expected to propose holding simultaneous elections for all three tiers of government—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies—beginning in 2029. It also recommended provisions for unity governments in cases like a hung house or no-confidence motions.

The Kovind panel, however, did not specify an exact timeframe for the implementation. It has recommended the formation of an 'Implementation Group' to oversee the execution of the proposed reforms.

Constitutional amendments will be required to implement 'One Nation, One Election'. The panel has identified 18 amendments, most of which will not require ratification by state assemblies. However, some constitutional amendment bills will need to be passed by Parliament.

The reform is seen as a significant step towards streamlining India’s electoral process, reducing the costs and disruptions caused by frequent elections, and ensuring the efficient use of national resources.
