Operation Sindoor: JeM's hidden comms hub in Sarjal destroyed

The facility, located within a primary health centre in Tehra Kalan village in Sarjal, Pakistan, had long been under surveillance by Indian security agencies due to its critical role in supporting terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources confirmed on Wednesday.

Local residents and members of media examine a building damaged by a missile strike near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.

One of the key targets in the Indian armed forces' precision strike during Operation Sindoor was a concealed communication hub used by the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror outfit.

The facility, located within a primary health centre in Tehra Kalan village in Sarjal, Pakistan, had long been under surveillance by Indian security agencies due to its critical role in supporting terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the sources, the structure was equipped with a High Frequency (HF) communication system that served as a vital link for coordinating with JeM operatives infiltrated across the Line of Control. This facility played a central role in enabling cross-border communication between handlers in Pakistan and active terrorist cells in Indian territory. The destruction of this site during the early Wednesday strikes is believed to have significantly disrupted JeM’s operational capabilities.

The terror installation in Sarjal, situated in the Shakargarh sector of Punjab, Pakistan, was singled out due to its advanced communication infrastructure. It included a tall antenna designed to support HF transmissions, allowing for long-range encrypted messaging and coordination. By neutralising this setup, Indian forces have dealt a strategic blow to the group's ability to manage its operations across the border, sources said.

Security officials further revealed that the Pakistani Army and its intelligence wing, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), have been actively supplying terrorist groups with sophisticated, military-grade communication tools. These include LoRa (Long Range) Ultra Sets and Digital Mobile Radios (DMR), specifically designed to evade conventional telecom surveillance.

To further support these groups, Pakistan has also enhanced the signal strength of its telecom networks near the International Border and Line of Control. This enhancement enables terrorists who infiltrate into Indian territory to continue using Pakistani telecom infrastructure, thus minimising the chances of detection by Indian agencies.

The LoRa Ultra Sets, tailored by Chinese manufacturers exclusively for the Pakistan Army, operate outside conventional GSM and CDMA frequency bands. These devices use encrypted radio wave transmissions linked to a central control station in Pakistan and rely on Chinese satellites to relay messages.

Notably, the system is designed so that two ultra sets cannot communicate with each other directly; all communication is routed through relay stations such as the one in Sarjal, now destroyed.

LoRa technology enables long-distance wireless communication at low frequencies, while DMR systems work over non-public radio networks. These networks support two-way voice and data transmission over both Very High Frequency (VHF) and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) bands.

Depending on the configuration, DMR devices—often resembling handheld walkie-talkies—can facilitate communication over ranges from 100 metres to over 100 kilometres. However, natural geographical features such as mountain ranges can impact the effectiveness and clarity of these signals.

The strike on the Sarjal facility is considered a major operational success in crippling JeM’s ability to conduct and coordinate future attacks within Indian borders.
