Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently addressed a rally in the Milkipur assembly constituency, sharing significant updates about the ongoing religious events in the state.
He proudly stated that 34 crore devotees had already taken a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, a significant religious site, highlighting the success of this event.
The Chief Minister also took the opportunity to criticise the opposition, particularly the Samajwadi Party (SP), over its stance on key developmental projects in the state.
In his speech, Yogi Adityanath pointed out that the Samajwadi Party had opposed key initiatives such as the establishment of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya and the naming of the Ayodhya International Airport after Maharshi Valmiki.
He claimed that the party’s leadership had also been vocal in their opposition to the Maha Kumbh, one of the largest spiritual and cultural events of this century. Despite this, he emphasised that the event had been a resounding success, with millions of devotees flocking to the Triveni Sangam to participate.
The Chief Minister further framed the upcoming Milkipur by-election as a crucial battle between nationalism and dynastic politics.
According to Adityanath, the Samajwadi Party’s concerns stemmed from their fear of losing control over the state as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government continued to make significant progress.
He reminded the audience of the SP’s history of hindering Uttar Pradesh’s development, accusing them of being the party responsible for firing bullets at 'Ram devotees' in Ayodhya in the past.
This rhetoric aimed to create a strong distinction between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party, portraying the BJP as the party of progress and development.
As the Milkipur by-election approaches on February 5, with the vote counting scheduled for February 8, the political landscape in the constituency is heating up.
The Congress Party, a member of the INDIA alliance, has opted not to field a candidate for the by-election, instead offering their support to the SP candidate. The SP has nominated Ajit Prasad, the son of Awadhesh Prasad, while the BJP has fielded Chandrabhan Paswan as their candidate.
Dimple Yadav, an MP from the Samajwadi Party, expressed confidence in the party’s victory during a recent media interaction. She stated that the SP would secure a decisive victory, sending a powerful message to the entire state and country.
This optimism comes on the heels of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the INDIA alliance, led by the Samajwadi Party, triumphed by winning 43 seats, leaving the BJP-led NDA with only 36 seats out of the 80 in Uttar Pradesh.
Despite this setback, the BJP experienced a resurgence during the assembly by-polls held in November, winning six seats and further strengthening its position in the state.
The SP, on the other hand, managed to win only two of the nine seats it contested, a result that highlights the growing competition between the two parties in Uttar Pradesh.
In her address, Dimple Yadav also commented on the tragic stampede that occurred during the Maha Kumbh, offering her condolences to the grieving families.
She expressed her sorrow over the unfortunate incident and called for the government to increase compensation for the affected families.
Yadav also demanded that all bodies be returned to the families for proper rites, as the situation continued to unfold with an air of solemnity.
As the Milkipur by-election draws closer, the political tension in Uttar Pradesh remains high. With both the BJP and the Samajwadi Party vying for influence, the outcome of this election will likely set the tone for future political battles in the state.
