More than four lakh government employees across India embraced the spirit of learning during the recently concluded National Learning Week, the Centre announced on Wednesday.
This initiative, dubbed "Karmayogi Saptah," took place from October 19 to 27, encouraging government employees to commit at least four hours towards professional development.
In an ambitious push for fostering a culture of continual learning, employees from entry-level positions to senior officials participated in this week-long programme, dedicated to honing new skills and enhancing their professional acumen.
According to the Personnel Ministry, “This wasn’t simply about completing courses — it was a movement that brought public servants across departments closer in their shared pursuit of professional excellence and personal development.”
Karmayogi Saptah recorded impressive statistics, underscoring its impact with 45.6 lakh course enrolments, 32.6 lakh completions, and more than 38 lakh cumulative learning hours.
Approximately 4.3 lakh participants dedicated at least four hours each to learning, while 37,000 Group A officers joined in, with senior officials demonstrating their commitment by engaging deeply in the programme.
Of particular significance was the involvement of Joint Secretaries and other high-ranking officials.
The Ministry stated, “Over 23,800 [participants] dedicating four or more hours to new learning. Joint Secretaries and higher-ranking officials were also deeply engaged, demonstrating that commitment to learning starts at the top.”
At the inaugural event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Karmayogi Competency Model, India’s first public human resources competency framework, drawing inspiration from indigenous knowledge systems.
This model encapsulates core ‘sankalpas’ (resolves) and ‘gunas’ (virtues) for Karmayogi officials to embody and practise in their professional environments.
Karmayogi Saptah unfolded as a transformative initiative, described by many participants as “a festival of learning,” in which employees across ministries eagerly embraced an opportunity to enrich their capabilities and expand their horizons.
The Personnel Ministry remarked, “From ministry to ministry, the employees at all levels embraced this chance to step out of their daily routines, not just to learn but to foster a culture of curiosity and engagement.”
For those involved, the experience went beyond standard training sessions, uniting public servants in a shared mission of professional excellence.
The Personnel Ministry highlighted how one senior officer, known for a demanding schedule, set aside time to study emerging technologies and modern governance.
“This personal commitment resonated with their peers, showing that, at every level, the desire to grow is what strengthens India’s public service,” the statement noted.
The scale of learning during Karmayogi Saptah reflected unprecedented enthusiasm, with daily course completions rising from a pre-week average of 40,000 to an astounding 3.55 lakh, indicating a renewed eagerness for growth among government staff.
Several courses achieved significant milestones, with the “Overview of Vikshit Bharat 2047” course garnering 3.8 lakh completions, “Swachata Hi Seva 2024” achieving 1.5 lakh, and “Jan Bhagidari” drawing over 44,000 completions.
Adding depth to the week’s activities was the “Indic Day Webinar Series” on October 21, where luminaries across fields discussed the integration of traditional knowledge systems with modern governance.
Key speakers included Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on “Secrets of Living a Stress-Free Life,” M K Sridhar on “National Education Policy,” and Dr Soumya Swaminathan on “India Public Health Towards Viksit Bharat.”
Additionally, Sister B K Shivani discussed creating a mindful work culture, while Kris Gopalakrishnan spoke on positioning India as a research and development powerhouse.
In the Ministry’s view, “The success of Karmayogi Saptah is a reminder that a commitment to continuous learning can shape not only careers but also the nation’s path forward, one empowered public servant at a time.”
As the initiative concluded, Karmayogi Saptah underscored the importance of equipping India’s public servants with the skills, compassion, and resilience needed to drive India forward.
