Pakistan reiterated on Sunday that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is an internationally recognised dispute that needs to be resolved according to UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

The statement came in response to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s remarks on Friday, in which he declared that “uninterrupted dialogue with Pakistan was over” during a book release event.

Jaishankar also added, “Actions have consequences, and insofar as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, I think Article 370 is done.”

In reaction, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, Foreign Office Spokesperson, expressed dissatisfaction with Jaishankar’s comments.

She stressed that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute must be resolved under UNSC resolutions and in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

“The issue today is what kind of relationship we can possibly expect with Pakistan. We are not passive, and whether events take a positive or negative direction, we will react,” Jaishankar had stated.

Baloch reiterated Pakistan’s stance that the solution to this long-standing dispute is crucial for peace and stability in both nations and South Asia as a whole.

She rejected the notion that the issue of J&K was settled, or to some extent settled, following the revocation of Article 370 by India.

While Pakistan remains committed to dialogue, it will not hesitate to respond to any aggression or hostile actions.

“Real peace and stability in South Asia can only be achieved through a settlement under UNSC resolutions and the inalienable rights of the Kashmiri people,” she said.

India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are its internal matters. It has repeatedly asserted that J&K “was, is, and shall forever” remain an integral part of the country. Since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, relations between the two nations have further deteriorated.

India has expressed a desire for normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan in an environment free from terror, hostility, and violence.

Both India and Pakistan claim J&K and Ladakh as their territories.
