The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence is scheduled to convene this afternoon at 3:00 PM in the Parliament House Annexe. The meeting comes in the wake of heightened security concerns following the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
This development follows Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg earlier today. Singh, who met with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, on Sunday, was briefed on key counter-terrorism decisions aimed at neutralising the perpetrators of the deadly April 22 attack.
The meeting comes three days after an all-party meeting was held on the Parliament premises, chaired by Singh, in the aftermath of the attack. The Pahalgam incident, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, mostly tourists, including a Nepalese national, occurred at around 2 PM on April 22 at Baisaran meadow. This attack is regarded as one of the deadliest since the 2019 Pulwama strike, which led to the deaths of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) teams have been stationed at the site since April 23, intensifying their search for evidence. The Indian Army has also been placed on high alert, with several search operations conducted to apprehend the terrorists responsible for the attack.
On April 23, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened to discuss the incident, condemning it in the strongest terms and extending condolences to the families of the victims.
The committee also expressed hope for the swift recovery of those injured in the attack. In the briefing to the CCS, officials highlighted the cross-border linkages of the attack and noted that it occurred following the successful conduct of elections in the Union Territory and its steady progress towards economic growth and development.
In a related development, India announced the ban of 16 Pakistani YouTube channels for spreading provocative and communally sensitive content and misinformation against India, its Army, and security agencies. These channels, with a combined following of over 63 million subscribers, were deemed to be exacerbating tensions following the tragic Pahalgam massacre.
