Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved's Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna have submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court, extending an unconditional apology for the misleading advertisements promoted by Patanjali Ayurveda.
In the affidavit, Baba Ramdev expressed remorse for the breach and assured the court of upholding the majesty of law and justice in the future. He also pledged to refrain from issuing similar misleading advertisements in the future, committing to compliance with the law.
Similarly, Acharya Balkrishna undertook to ensure the prevention of such offending advertisements in the future and vowed to exercise greater vigilance.
The Supreme Court had previously directed Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna to file fresh affidavits within a week after taking strong exception to their initial apology, considering it a violation of the undertakings given to the court.
In response to a show cause notice in contempt proceedings over misleading advertisements, both were asked to appear before the court for further hearing on April 10. This development comes after the court observed prima facie violations of its order cautioning against misleading advertisements about Patanjali's medicines.
Earlier, Patanjali Ayurveda had faced criticism from the court for not responding to the show cause notice in contempt proceedings. The court had restrained the company from advertising or branding its products as treatments for diseases and cautioned against making statements against any system of medicine.
These actions were in response to a plea by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which sought guidelines to curb false and misleading advertisements related to allopathy and modern medicine.
The IMA's plea highlighted concerns regarding the misinformation campaign against the modern medical system and sought immediate action against Patanjali Ayurveda for violating various laws and regulations governing advertisements.
The petition underscored the illegal and prohibited claims made by Patanjali Ayurveda in its advertisements, urging authorities to take strict and prompt action in accordance with relevant laws.
The affidavit submitted by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings concerning misleading advertisements by Patanjali Ayurveda. The unconditional apology reflects a commitment to rectify past mistakes and uphold legal standards in future business practices.
