Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with senior BJP leaders, paid tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary. Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, is remembered as a great son of the country, an eminent thinker, and an educationist.
In a post on X, PM Modi called Mookerjee a dedicated servant of Mother India, whose dynamic personality will continue to inspire future generations. Modi highlighted Mookerjee's contributions to the nation and his unwavering commitment to its service.
Home Minister Amit Shah also honoured Mookerjee, praising his lifelong fight for the unity, integrity, and self-respect of the country. Shah emphasised Mookerjee's role in making Jammu and Kashmir an integral part of India with the slogan "Ek Nishan, Ek Vidhan, Ek Pradhan" (One Symbol, One Constitution, One Leader).
Shah noted Mookerjee's significant impact on keeping West Bengal a part of India and his transformative suggestions in the Constituent Assembly regarding language and culture. Shah affirmed that Mookerjee's legacy will continue to guide future generations.
BJP president JP Nadda paid floral tributes to Mookerjee at the BJP headquarters in Delhi. He also distributed plant saplings among party workers as a mark of respect.
Nadda praised Mookerjee's dedication to the nation's progress and sovereignty, stating that his work in education and cultural nationalism is unforgettable. He reiterated that Mookerjee's sacrifice and dedication will inspire every Indian to put the nation first.
Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor of the BJP. He also served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.
According to the BJP’s official website, Mookerjee resigned from the Cabinet on April 6, 1950, over the Delhi pact with Liaquat Ali Khan. He later founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951, in Delhi, becoming its first president.
Mookerjee's life was marked by his unwavering commitment to national unity and integrity. In 1953, during a visit to Kashmir, he was arrested on May 11 and died under detention on June 23, 1953. His contributions to the country and his vision for a united India continue to be remembered and honoured by the nation.
On this occasion, BJP’s Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva, Sudhanshu Trivedi, and other party leaders also paid tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee, reaffirming his enduring legacy in the country's history.
