Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Thailand for a two-day trip to attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit. This will be his third visit to the country, following previous visits in 2016 and 2019.
During his stay in Bangkok, Modi will engage in bilateral talks with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
The discussions will focus on strengthening ties between India and Thailand, reviewing existing partnerships, and exploring new avenues of cooperation. Both leaders will also witness the signing of several bilateral agreements, further solidifying their strategic partnership.
The BIMSTEC Summit, scheduled for Friday, will be held under the theme "BIMSTEC – Prosperous, Resilient and Open." A key highlight of the event will be the adoption of the Bangkok Vision 2030, a framework aimed at shaping the future of regional cooperation.
Additionally, the BIMSTEC Eminent Persons’ Group Report will be endorsed to outline the organisation’s long-term roadmap.
Modi is also expected to have an audience with King Rama X and Queen Suthida, reinforcing India’s diplomatic ties with Thailand.
India and Thailand share deep-rooted historical, cultural, and economic ties. Thailand is India’s maritime neighbour and plays a crucial role in the Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific vision.
As ASEAN’s third-largest economy, Thailand is India’s fourth-largest trading partner in the region, with bilateral trade valued at nearly $15 billion. India’s exports to Thailand account for around $5 billion, while imports stand at approximately $10 billion.
India’s focus in BIMSTEC remains on enhancing institutional capacity, strengthening security collaboration, and improving regional connectivity.
The summit is expected to conclude with several agreements aimed at boosting trade, infrastructure, and strategic cooperation. Modi’s visit is expected to add further momentum to India-Thailand relations, building on the positive trajectory since his last visit in 2019.
