Rashtrapati Bhavan hosts PM Modi and HM Amit Shah.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday separately called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the capital.

The meetings took place a day before the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament resumes on Monday.

In a post on X, Rashtrapati Bhavan said: “Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” and shared photographs of Modi with Murmu.

In another post, Rashtrapati Bhavan stated: “Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

No official details were immediately available about what was discussed during either meeting.

The meetings come at a time when Parliament has witnessed heated exchanges over the Special Intensive Revision process being carried out in Bihar ahead of Assembly elections in the state.

Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with the President also followed his remarks on Saturday that the welfare of farmers, small industries and youth remains the government’s “top priority” as India continues on its path to becoming the world’s third-largest economy.

His comments came amid fresh economic concerns after former US President Donald Trump announced that India would face a 25 per cent tariff on its goods starting August 7.

Reaffirming confidence in the resilience of the Indian economy, Modi told a rally in Varanasi that India must stay vigilant to safeguard its interests and promote ‘swadeshi’ products to counter global uncertainties.

“There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are focusing on their individual interests. India is going to become the third biggest economy in the world, and this is why India will have to stay alert as far as its economic interests are concerned,” Modi said.

Trump, who is campaigning for another term, said India would face the new tariff barrier and an additional penalty for continuing to purchase oil from Russia despite Western sanctions.

Since the Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced on July 21, it has seen repeated disruptions and little legislative business.
