On 14th January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in the celebrations marking the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
The event, which will begin at approximately 10:30 AM, will include a special address by the Prime Minister, highlighting the significant milestones achieved by the IMD over the past 150 years.
During the celebrations, the Prime Minister will launch the ambitious ‘Mission Mausam’, aimed at making India a ‘Weather-ready and Climate-smart’ nation.
The mission’s primary objective is to enhance India’s preparedness for extreme weather events and climate change through the development of advanced weather surveillance technologies.
This includes the implementation of high-resolution atmospheric observations, state-of-the-art radar systems, next-generation satellites, and high-performance computing systems.
Additionally, the mission will focus on improving the understanding of weather and climate processes, and providing data on air quality that will aid in long-term weather management and intervention strategies.
Alongside the launch of Mission Mausam, Prime Minister Modi will also unveil the IMD Vision-2047 document. This vision document outlines a comprehensive plan for weather resilience and climate change adaptation, focusing on strategies for improving weather forecasting, enhancing weather management practices, and addressing climate change mitigation.
The release of the Vision-2047 document is a significant step towards strengthening India’s ability to cope with the challenges posed by climate change while ensuring sustainable development.
In addition to these key announcements, the IMD will showcase its achievements through a series of events, activities, and workshops.
These initiatives aim to highlight the department's role in making India more climate-resilient, as well as its contributions to improving weather forecasting and climate management.
The celebrations will also provide an opportunity to demonstrate how government institutions are instrumental in offering various weather and climate services, which are crucial for the nation's growth and well-being.
