Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed concern about the rising drug problem among youngsters, saying that "addiction causes a significant cost to society and the nation."
In a video speech to the World Gayatri Pariwar's Ashwamedha Yagya, PM Modi stressed that drugs are a danger that kills lives if not regulated.
He added that the Centre began the "NashaMukt Bharat Abhiyan" on August 15, 2020, which till now has already reached about 11 million people.
"If drugs are not managed, they become a threat to people's lives. Our government launched a pan-India de-addiction effort three to four years ago. This initiative has already attracted 11 million participants. Gayatri Pariwar is also involved in this campaign," the Prime Minister said.
He praised Gayatri Pariwar for hosting the event and underlined that the Yagya is an important social resolution movement that would assist in liberating lakhs of young people from drug addiction.
"The kids are the future... The young have a responsibility to create 'Viksit Bharat' in this Amrit Kaal," said the PM, adding, "Many people relate Ashwamedha Yagya to politics. However, I've seen that this Ashwamedha Yagya emphasizes Acharya Shriram Sharma's sentiments," PM Modi said.
The 'Ashwamedha Yagya' has become a grand social campaign, he said, highlighting its role in steering millions of youths away from addiction and towards nation-building activities.
He highlighted the extensive outreach efforts including bike rallies, oath-taking ceremonies, and street plays conducted in collaboration with social and religious organisations.
The integration of the youth with larger national and global initiatives will help them keep away from any addiction, the prime minister said, noting their important role in achieving the goals of a developed and self-reliant India.
In national and global campaigns, the more the youth is involved, the more they will stay away from the wrong path, he said.
