Prasar Bharati gets Navneet Kumar Sehgal as new chairman after 4 years

According to the reports, senior UP Cadre IAS officer Navneet Sehgal (Retd IAS: 1988: UP) has been chosen to succeed A Surya Prakash, who served till February 2020. Sehgal retired in July 2023.

Navneet Kumar Sehgal, a retired bureaucrat has been appointed as the new Prasar Bharati Chairman on Saturday, said an official. 

 

The post was vacant for over four years since the last chairman A Surya Prakash’s term ended in 2020. According to the reports, senior UP Cadre IAS officer Navneet Sehgal (Retd IAS: 1988: UP) has been chosen to succeed A Surya Prakash, who served till February 2020. Sehgal retired in July 2023.

 

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of Section 4 of the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990 read with sub-section (4) of Section 4 and sub-section (1) of Section 6 of that Act, the President, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee, made the appointment of Sehgal.

 

Additionally, the terms and conditions of his appointment shall be governed by the provisions of the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990 and the rules made thereunder.

 

Sehgal will chair the country's official broadcaster for three years, or until he reaches the age of 70. It should be noted that other crucial positions such as Member (HR) and Member (Finance) have been empty for some months.

 

Meanwhile, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, headed the selection panel for the post of Prasar Bharati chairman. The chairperson of the Press Council of India and a nominee of the President complete the three-member panel. 

 

As per sources, the selection conference was also attended by Press Council of India chairwoman Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (retd) and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju (IAS: 1991 AP).
