On Thursday, President of India Droupadi Murmu will present the National Teachers’ Award 2024 to 82 distinguished educators at an event held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. This prestigious award recognizes the exceptional contributions of teachers who have significantly enhanced educational quality and positively impacted their students' lives.
The National Teachers’ Award is an annual event that celebrates teachers on September 5, the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, in honour of National Teachers’ Day. Each awardee will receive a certificate of merit, a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, and a silver medal. Additionally, the recipients will have the chance to interact with the Prime Minister.
This year, 50 teachers have been selected through a comprehensive three-stage process that includes district, state, and national levels. They represent 28 states, three Union Territories, and six organisations.
Of these, 34 are men, 16 are women, two are differently abled, and one works with children with special needs. Alongside these, 16 teachers from the Department of Higher Education and 16 from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will also receive awards.
The selection process aims to highlight and reward teachers who demonstrate outstanding commitment and dedication. The National Education Policy 2020 emphasises the importance of motivated and capable educators in advancing students, institutions, and the profession. It supports such initiatives by providing incentives and recognition to foster excellence in education.
In a new development for 2023, two additional categories of awards have been introduced for teachers in Higher Education Institutions and Polytechnics, expanding the scope of recognition beyond school teachers. The selected teachers from these categories come from polytechnics, state universities, and central higher education institutions.
