State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have implemented a fresh round of price hikes for commercial LPG gas cylinders, affecting consumers across major cities in India. Effective from March 1, 2024, the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders have been increased by ₹25. This surge marks the second consecutive month of price hikes, following a similar increase in February.

In the national capital, Delhi, the retail price of a 19 kg commercial gas cylinder now stands at ₹1,795, reflecting the latest price adjustment. Similarly, in Mumbai, consumers will now have to pay ₹1,749 for a 19 kg cylinder. The revised prices in other major cities are ₹1,960 in Chennai and ₹1,911 in Kolkata.

This recent hike follows a similar upward adjustment on February 1, when the rates of 19-kg gas cylinders were raised by ₹14. Last month, the cost of a 19-kg gas cylinder stood at ₹1,769.50 in Delhi, ₹1,887 in Kolkata, ₹1,723 in Mumbai, and ₹1,937 in Chennai, respectively.

Prior to these consecutive hikes, the last adjustment in commercial gas cylinder rates occurred on December 1, 2023, when prices were raised by ₹21 across various locations in the country. However, there was a brief respite for consumers on the eve of New Year 2024, when prices were slashed by ₹39.50 per cylinder.

  • Delhi- ₹1,769.50

  • Mumbai- ₹1,723

  • Chennai- ₹1,937

In contrast, the prices of domestic gas cylinders have remained stable during this period. Currently, the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder stands at ₹903 in Delhi, ₹929 in Kolkata, ₹902.50 in Mumbai, and ₹918.50 in Chennai.

It's worth noting that state-owned oil companies such as Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) regularly revise cooking gas prices on the 1st of every month based on the average international price in the previous month. These adjustments are aimed at reflecting changes in global oil prices and ensuring fair pricing for consumers.

Consumers are likely to feel the pinch of these consecutive price hikes, especially those who rely on commercial LPG cylinders for their businesses or commercial activities. The increase in fuel prices can have ripple effects on various sectors of the economy, impacting transportation costs, food prices, and overall inflation levels.

As such, it's essential for consumers and businesses to budget accordingly and explore alternative energy sources or efficiency measures to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices.
