In a show of strong support following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer his condolences and reaffirm Russia’s solidarity with India in its fight against terrorism.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared details of the phone call via social media platform X. According to Jaiswal, President Putin unequivocally condemned the Pahalgam attack and expressed sorrow over the loss of innocent lives.

“Putin strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, India. He conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism. He emphasised that the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice,” Jaiswal posted.

During the conversation, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the “special and privileged strategic partnership” between India and Russia, which spans decades of bilateral cooperation. Prime Minister Modi also extended warm greetings to President Putin on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, commemorated on May 9 in Russia to mark the end of World War II in Europe. Modi further invited Putin to India for the annual high-level bilateral summit to be held later this year.

In response, the Kremlin confirmed that President Putin had accepted the invitation. “The Indian leader confirmed his invitation to the Russian president to visit India for an annual bilateral summit. The invitation was gratefully accepted,” the Kremlin said in an official statement, according to reports.

This high-level communication follows diplomatic engagement at the ministerial level. On May 2, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and discussed the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. Jaishankar took to social media to share that he had emphasised the need to hold the perpetrators and those supporting the attack aPutin Backs India After Pahalgam Attack, Accepts Modi’s Inviteccountable. “Its perpetrators, backers and planners must be brought to justice,” Jaishankar posted.

The Russian Embassy in New Delhi also issued a statement summarising the call, noting that Lavrov and Jaishankar had discussed the increasing tensions between India and Pakistan following the terrorist incident. The embassy highlighted Lavrov’s proposal for a diplomatic path forward, urging peaceful dialogue between New Delhi and Islamabad.

“Sergey Lavrov called for the settlement of disagreements between New Delhi and Islamabad by political and diplomatic means on a bilateral basis in accordance with the provisions of the Simla Agreement of 1972 and the Lahore Declaration of 1999,” the statement said.

The strong diplomatic backing from Russia underscores the resilience of the India-Russia relationship, particularly in moments of crisis, and signals a united front against terrorism.
