Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for calling him and sharing details of his recent meeting with United States President Donald Trump in Alaska.
“Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska,” Modi wrote in a post on X.
The Prime Minister reiterated India’s position on the Ukraine war, saying the country has consistently called for peace and supports efforts to end the conflict.
“India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” he added.
Putin and Trump met in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15 to discuss ways to halt the ongoing war in Ukraine. The high-profile summit, which lasted nearly three hours, ended without a formal agreement, though both leaders described the talks as constructive.
The meeting carried significance as it came soon after Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on select Indian goods and an additional 25 per cent penalty on imports linked to Russian oil purchases. The US president accused India of indirectly funding Moscow’s war effort by buying discounted Russian crude.
India had earlier welcomed the Alaska summit, calling the leadership of Trump and Putin “highly commendable” in pursuing peace.
India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Saturday.
The ministry further said that dialogue and diplomacy were the only way forward.
"India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” the statement added.

Following the summit, Trump described the discussions as “very productive,” saying that while progress was made, there was still no agreement.
“There were many, many points that we agreed on. I would say a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there, but we’ve made some headway. So there’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he said at a joint press conference with Putin.
Trump, however, shifted responsibility to Kyiv and its allies for the next steps. “Now, it’s really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done. And I would also say the European nations, they have to get involved a little — but it’s up to President Zelenskyy,” Trump remarked.
The Alaska summit was the latest attempt at easing the deadliest conflict in Europe since the Second World War, now in its fourth year.
