National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is set to visit France today for a two-day trip, with a potential Rafale deal high on the agenda.

Defence officials have revealed that Doval’s meetings will focus on finalising the procurement of Rafale Marine jets from French manufacturer Dassault Aviation, intended to bolster the Indian Navy’s fighter aircraft fleet.

This visit follows France's submission of the final detailed offer for the Rafale deal during recent negotiations in New Delhi. India is keen to conclude the deal by the end of the fiscal year, sources have indicated.

The proposed purchase would see India acquire 22 single-seat Rafale Marine aircraft, alongside four twin-seat trainers, marking the country’s second significant purchase of French fighter jets in recent years. These new jets will replace the ageing Russian MiG-29K aircraft currently deployed by the Navy.

The Defence Acquisition Council has already approved the procurement, which comes amid the Indian Navy's pressing need for additional aircraft and submarines.

The acquisition is seen as a critical step in enhancing India's naval combat capabilities.

Additionally, discussions between India and France have emphasised increasing the "Make in India" component of the deal, with India eager to boost its domestic aircraft manufacturing industry as part of its broader defence strategy.
