The Jharkhand Congress is gearing up to strengthen its presence at the grassroots level as party leaders prepare to meet in Delhi under the leadership of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi.
The focus of the meeting will be to empower district-level leaders and refine the party’s strategy for the state.
The Congress remains a key ally in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led state government, retaining 16 assembly seats in the last elections, the same as in 2019. Despite this, party leaders believe that a more robust district-level approach is essential to consolidate its position and expand its influence.
According to state Congress leaders, the meeting will primarily discuss how district unit presidents can play a greater role in shaping state politics. The discussions will include involving them in crucial committees responsible for screening and selecting election candidates.
The initiative aligns with the party’s broader national strategy of decentralising power and strengthening its organisational structure at the grassroots level.
Jharkhand Congress President Keshav Mahto Kamlesh emphasised that district presidents have always played a vital role in election processes. However, the upcoming meeting will give them added responsibility in screening candidates for parliamentary and assembly elections.
Kamlesh highlighted that decentralisation is key to ensuring a stronger and more efficient party structure across the state.
Jharkhand Congress spokesperson Rajesh Sinha confirmed that all district unit presidents from the state would attend the meeting at the Indira Gandhi Bhavan in Delhi.
The discussions are also expected to set the stage for the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, scheduled for 8th and 9th April, where all 30 members of the Jharkhand Congress unit will be present.
Sinha reiterated that district presidents have traditionally played a crucial role in the party’s electoral strategies, dating back to the 1970s.
Their responsibilities have included identifying and promoting potential candidates for the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. The upcoming meeting aims to reinforce this role, ensuring that local party leadership is more actively involved in the decision-making process.
The meeting comes at a time when the Congress is looking to strengthen its position across various states, particularly in alliance-driven governments.
By focusing on grassroots leadership, the party aims to build a more connected and dynamic organisation in Jharkhand, preparing for future political battles at both state and national levels.
