In a recent address, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasised the urgent need for the private sector to take a leading role in India's defence sector. He made this statement during the DRDO Industry Workshop focused on accelerating defence technology in Delhi. Singh pointed out that the private industry possesses the necessary capabilities to not only adapt to rapid technological advancements but also to drive innovation.
Singh underscored the profound impact of technology on modern warfare, noting that it extends beyond traditional combat scenarios. He mentioned the rise of unconventional warfare methods, including the use of drones, cyber warfare, biological weapons, and advancements in space defence. These developments present new challenges that the defence sector must address.
The Minister articulated a clear vision for the future of India's defence sector, stating that it must become more innovative and technology-driven. He assured the audience that the Government of India, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, is committed to achieving this goal. Singh expressed optimism about the positive changes already underway, which he believes will further strengthen the nation's defence capabilities.
Rajnath Singh highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in defence research and development. He called for cooperation among various stakeholders, including scientists, industrialists, academic institutions, startups, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and young entrepreneurs. According to Singh, this collective approach is essential for fortifying the defence sector in India.
He reflected on the evolution of warfare, noting that it has transformed significantly over the past few decades. The conventional methods of warfare that were prevalent 50 to 60 years ago have changed dramatically, primarily due to technological advancements. Singh emphasised that this shift underscores the importance of ongoing innovation and collaboration in the defence field.
