Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar extended a warm welcome to the 61 newly-elected and nominated members of the House during the commencement of its 264th session. He emphasised the importance of harnessing their potential to fulfil the aspirations of the people and urged collective efforts towards nurturing democracy.

"This session follows the recent general elections and state assembly polls in four states. The people of India have reaffirmed their trust in our democratic principles and values through their participation in this significant 'festival of democracy'," Dhankhar stated.

Acknowledging the partial reconstitution of the Upper House after the biennial elections, he congratulated the new members and expressed confidence in their ability to contribute effectively. He highlighted the essential role of dialogue, discussion, deliberation, and debate in the democratic process.

"Let us all work together towards the flourishing of democracy. Our contributions in fostering meaningful exchanges are crucial," Dhankhar affirmed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present in the session where he introduced the council of ministers to the House. Dhankhar recognized Modi's third consecutive term as Prime Minister, a historical achievement after six decades, which received applause from the members.

During the session, J P Nadda was appointed as the leader of the House, an announcement greeted with enthusiasm by the members.

Later, Dhankhar engaged in discussions with several members individually in his chamber. Additionally, six new members took their oaths, further enriching the composition of the Rajya Sabha.

The House also addressed reports from the Privileges Committee, which found 12 MPs, including AAP's Sanjay Singh, guilty of misconduct for disrupting proceedings.

The committee recommended cautionary measures for their conduct and suggested the lifting of Sanjay Singh's previous suspension, deeming the punishment sufficient.

The proceedings underscored the ongoing commitment to uphold parliamentary decorum while fostering constructive legislative engagements for the benefit of the nation.
