Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has decided not to comply with the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) summons for questioning in connection with an illegal mining case dating back five years, according to party sources.

Yadav, identified as a witness in the case, conveyed his reluctance to appear before the CBI, questioning why the agency had not sought his input on the matter over the past five years.

''I know that when the election arrives, notice will follow. Why will I be nervous? "If you (BJP) have done a lot of work in the last ten years, why are you nervous?" he asked.

In the midst of these developments, Yadav attended a meeting organized by the PDA (Picchda, Dalit, and Alpsankhyak) at the Samajwadi Party headquarters, reaffirming his commitment to party engagements in Lucknow.

Responding to inquiries about Yadav's absence from Delhi on Thursday, a party spokesperson reiterated their lack of specific information on the CBI notice while highlighting Yadav's status as a witness rather than an accused party in the investigation.

The CBI had summoned Yadav to appear before them on February 29, as part of their investigation into suspected irregularities in the issuance of mining leases during his tenure as chief minister. These allegations include permitting unlawful mining activities and unauthorized permit renewals, despite directives from the National Green Tribunal.

Yadav, in response to the 2019 charges, condemed the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging political motives behind the timing of the summons.

He suggested that the BJP resorts to such tactics as elections draw near, questioning their nervousness despite being in power for the past decade.
