Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit, contesting from the New Delhi assembly constituency, has written to Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, demanding strict action against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
Dikshit’s letter was in response to Kejriwal’s recent remarks alleging “poisoning” of the Yamuna River, which he termed as a deliberate act by the BJP-led Haryana government.
In his letter, Dikshit criticised Kejriwal for making what he called “shocking and irresponsible statements” to the media. Kejriwal had claimed that Delhi’s water supply had been deliberately poisoned as part of an alleged conspiracy by the Haryana government to harm the people of the national capital.
The Congress leader described these allegations as baseless and demanded an immediate investigation.
Speaking to the media, Dikshit reiterated the need for a thorough inquiry into the claims. He emphasised that if Kejriwal’s allegations were found to be true, strict action should be taken against the Haryana government.
However, he also stated that if the allegations proved to be false, Kejriwal and other AAP leaders should face legal consequences for spreading misinformation.
Dikshit referenced a letter from the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board, which he claimed refuted Kejriwal’s accusations. According to Dikshit, the evidence presented by the water board suggested that no such “poisoning” had occurred.
He argued that if this were the case, a case should be registered against Kejriwal for misleading the public and making inflammatory statements.
The controversy began on Monday when Kejriwal accused the BJP-ruled Haryana government of deliberately polluting the Yamuna River.
He alleged that the contaminated water, if mixed with Delhi’s drinking water supply, could have resulted in widespread casualties, amounting to what he described as “mass genocide.”
These remarks drew sharp criticism from various quarters, including the BJP. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini strongly refuted Kejriwal’s claims and warned of legal action.
Saini described Kejriwal’s statements as “blatantly false and disgusting” and demanded an immediate apology. He further threatened to file a defamation suit if Kejriwal failed to retract his remarks.
Saini accused Kejriwal of attempting to deflect attention from his own government’s shortcomings by making unfounded allegations. He stated that Haryana has consistently worked towards improving water quality and ensuring a steady supply to Delhi.
The Chief Minister added that such baseless accusations only serve to spread panic among citizens and create unnecessary political tension.
The Aam Aadmi Party has yet to provide concrete evidence supporting Kejriwal’s claims. However, the allegations have sparked a fresh political row between the two states, with leaders from both sides exchanging sharp words.
This incident has also drawn attention to the broader issue of water management and pollution in the Yamuna River. Environmentalists and activists have long criticised the poor state of the river, which is heavily polluted due to industrial waste, untreated sewage, and other contaminants.
