On Tuesday, in a remarkable display of camaraderie, fighter planes from Saudi Arabia escorted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aircraft as it entered Saudi airspace on its way to Jeddah.
This gesture marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the port city in 40 years. The aircraft was accompanied by F-15 fighter jets from the Royal Saudi Air Force as it traversed the skies of Saudi Arabia.
Prime Minister Modi's visit to Saudi Arabia was made on the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Taking off early Tuesday morning, Modi expressed the deep appreciation India holds for its long-standing and historic relations with Saudi Arabia.
In a statement released before his departure, the Prime Minister emphasised that these ties have grown significantly stronger and more strategic in recent years, spanning areas such as defence, trade, investment, energy, and cultural exchange.
As the two countries have cultivated a mutually beneficial partnership, Modi highlighted the depth of cooperation, particularly in the fields of defence, trade, and energy. The visit is expected to further cement these areas of collaboration while opening doors for new opportunities in regional security and connectivity.
During the two-day visit, Modi is expected to engage in detailed discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on a wide array of issues, including trade, investment, defence, and regional security.
According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, both leaders will co-chair the second meeting of the Bilateral Strategic Partnership Council, where several agreements are likely to be finalised to enhance cooperation. Modi's itinerary is also expected to include a conversation regarding Hajj, particularly concerning the quota for Indian pilgrims, a significant issue for both countries.
Jeddah holds special significance for both India and Saudi Arabia, serving as a historic port that facilitated centuries of trade between the two nations.
It is also an important gateway for pilgrims traveling to Mecca for Hajj and Umrah. Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Suhel Ajaz Khan, explained that the city’s importance as a hub of connectivity cannot be overstated.
He further emphasised the Indian government's ongoing efforts to ensure smooth coordination with Saudi authorities on Hajj-related matters, which are always a key point of discussion during bilateral talks.
The visit is expected to enhance the already strong diplomatic ties between the two nations, and discussions will likely focus on strengthening economic ties and cooperation in energy, defence, and regional security issues.
